It's been awhile....Fall has passed and winter is in with lots of cold weather! We feel the best way to enjoy the winter cold is to build an ice rink in our back yard. We have wood "boards", use thick plastic as a liner, and pour water when we know the temps will be below freezing for longer than 3 days straight.
This is Viktor showing a support. We made a lot of these. The rink mostly goes right on top of the grass, with one corner on the back patio.
This is Erik on the first night on the ice. After almost every skate we "resurface" the ice.
Sometimes we use a hose to add water to the rink, sometimes we pour water with a bucket, sometimes we just patch with snow and water. It's an everyday thing. Here Kris is adding water to packed snow. It seems to work pretty well also.
The family likes to play hockey. We get in a lot of "stick and puck" practice having our own rink!
It is a lot of work. Every time it snows you have to shovel it off. Snow acts somewhat like an insulator to the ice. It's best to keep the ice bare to the temps.
We enjoy testing out goalie gear on the rink. When else can you shoot pucks at your kid? LOL! We love that we can skate outside, in the shadow of these beautiful mountains and have grand family and friend time while doing an activity that we love. What could be better than this?
